Understanding Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)
The only humane, science-based solution for stabilizing and reducing community cat populations in Kern County.
Our Process

01
Trap – We don't just "catch" cats; we manage the process with care. Using humane, gravity-based box traps, our trained volunteers set up in specific colony locations during optimal feeding times. We use high-value bait to ensure a quick entry, and the moment the door closes, we cover the trap with a breathable cloth. This immediately calms the cat, reducing stress and keeping them feeling secure as they begin their journey.

02
Neuter –Every cat is treated as a patient, not just a statistic. They are transported to a high-volume spay/neuter clinic where licensed veterinarians perform the surgery. While under anesthesia, the cat also receives a rabies vaccination and a FVRCP (distemper) shot. Finally, a small, painless "ear-tip" is performed on the left ear—this is the universal symbol of a protected, sterilized community cat.

03
Recovery & Care – After surgery, the cats aren't just left alone. They stay safely in their covered traps for a minimum of 24 hours so we can monitor them as they wake up from anesthesia. Our volunteers check on them regularly to ensure they are alert, hydrated, and recovering comfortably. This "rest period" is vital to ensure they are 100% ready to return to their outdoor environment.

04
Return – The most rewarding step! Once a cat is fully recovered and cleared by our team, they are returned to the exact location where they were trapped. This is their home, where they have established food sources and social bonds. Because they are now fixed and vaccinated, they no longer feel the urge to fight or roam, allowing them to live a peaceful, healthy life as a permanent "neighborhood resident."
