We’re Neighbors Helping Neighbors (and Cats)

We are a grassroots team of neighbors, advocates, and cat lovers dedicated to Bakersfield. Born out of a need for humane population control, The Whisker Project isn't just about cats; it's about building a stronger, more informed community.

We believe that through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and dedicated guardianship, we can create a world where Bakersfield’s community cats are healthy, sterilized, and respected in their outdoor homes.

Our Three-Pillar Approach

  • Bakersfield Feral cat being held by a veterinarian tech

    Phase 1: Assess

We provide a free on-site evaluation of your neighborhood. Our team identifies the size of the colony, assesses the health of the cats, and creates a customized plan to stabilize the population.

  • The Whisker Project of Kern TNR cat reading a book

    Phase 2: Intervene

We lead the professional trapping and transport. Every cat is sterilized, vaccinated, and ear-tipped by licensed veterinarians to stop the cycle of kittens and improve the health of the colony immediately.

  • The Whisker Project of Kern TNR cat in a Trap waiting to visit a Veterinarian

    Phase 3: Manage

The cats return to their outdoor homes. We empower you with the tools and education needed to be a Colony Guardian, ensuring the neighborhood remains stabilized, quiet, and kitten-free for the long term.

Need Help Right Away?

While our volunteers check their traps and inboxes, here are some quick resources:

  • Is it an Emergency? We are a volunteer TNR group, not a vet clinic. If a cat is injured or in distress, please contact a 24-hour clinic in Bakersfield:

    • Animal Emergency & Urgent Care:
      (661) 322-6019

    • VCA Bakersfield Animal Hospital:
      (661) 327-4444

  • Don't Stop Feeding: If you’re requesting TNR help, please keep the cats on a regular feeding schedule. Consistency is key for successful trapping!

  • Check for the "Ear-tip": Look at the cat’s left ear. If the tip is square, they’re already fixed and part of a managed colony!

  • Low-Cost Vouchers: If you're looking for spay/neuter vouchers, check with Critters Without Litters or Kern County Animal Services.
